Last dual boot in April this year on my acer predator helios 300. That machine kaput after the last windows 24h2 update ![]()
The last time I used dual boot was until March 29, 2024 (Fedora/Windows 11 Pro). From March 30 onwards, I only used EndeavourOS on my PC.
I am an avid supporter of single booting! I have never dual booted. When I decided to use Linux I went all in and tried to tackle every issue that got in my way (thankfully not many).
Sadly I install Windows on machines I flip, and I hate it - worst installation process ever especially when you add driver installation.
The question is “How many of you still dual-boot Windows?”
The responses are mostly from those who say they don’t ![]()
Well if Uncle wanted answers about Windows, he’s mostly on the wrong forum ![]()
My thought is that he’s actually encouraged by the number of people who say they have no use for Windows ! I know I am (kinda surprised but very happy)
My bad, I thought the question was ‘when was the last time you dualboot?’. Some how my brain auto read it that way ![]()
No worries! I just found it a bit amusing!
I just have installed Windows 11 on my Laptop, it was an EndeavourOS single boot untill then.
The host name of the Windows system is: biosflasher
I just could not find a reliable way to update the bios, so I was ‘forced’ to give the biosflasher 52GB of the SSD. ![]()
Modern UEFI’s all you have to do is copy a file to a flash drive and then use the UEFI’s flash tool to update the UEFI.
Have you tried Hirens Boot? I just got a Dell Optiplex that I had to update the Bios for and this was what I used and it worked very well. I just downloaded the exe version of the bios update and copied to a thumbdrive booted up to Hirens and installed the Bios. Went smooth and no giving up diskspace for a simple upgrade.
I do for work, which is quite annoying, but overall it works pretty flawless in terms of coexisting alongside arch. Just make sure to first install Windows so it doesn’t meddle with the Linux boot partition.
For now I got Windows Pro working decently using scoop, Powertoys (for quick menu and hotkeys) and some other modifications. Also having a local account is a must. I have to say, contrary to many people, I have had no problems until now dual booting or using Windows 11. Everything just works.
But I sure as hell wish I could simply use Linux for work…
Hiren’s works well, if you install something it will also save on a location on your usb flash drive so that next time you boot with it you don’t have to install it again. At least that’s how it was with when I tried using it with Ventoy.
Yeah that is what I used was Ventoy I didn’t save anything however as I just booted into it opened explorer navigated to the thumb with the update and ran it from the usb thumb worked well. It rebooted the system took a few to install the updates then rebooted did its check and up comes the Login Screen. Easy Peasy.
I still dual boot. Technically. Have since 2008, mostly for gaming purpose (all serious work → Linux), until early 2023, when I started gaming almost exclusively on Linux, with few issues (thanks, EOS!).
I boot it maybe twice a year these days, mainly to debug something that happened to someone else’s computer.
Apart from that, the horrid local backup app for Samsung phones works neither with wine or in a VM (or at least I can’t get the USB passthrough to work with it in Virtual Box). Also the crapware to permanently configure some peripherals.
Every time I boot it, I’m reminded how much I hate its guts by a flurry of “YES / remind me later (in small) / no there is no NO option, duck you” messages. And each time I wonder whether the Win updates will nuke GRUB or something.
Next time I make a PC I’ll probably keep a dedicated, old, Win laptop somewhere instead of dualbooting to handle the odd spot of crapware.
I’d lose the ability to game on Windows to debug / compare performance across OSs, but if I really end up wanting that I think I’d rather take the time to learn to do single-GPU passthrough to virtualise Win, rather than let it access the bare metal.
The great downside of dualbooting for me is that I’m terrified of experimenting with my system because, while reinstalling Linux and restoring my stuff from backup is a trivial and well-practiced process that takes maybe 20min of active work (my laptops are essentially partial clones of my main machine, “restored” from backup via scripts), if I mess up and have to reinstall windows as well, there is so much stuff I can’t automate I don’t even want to think about it.
My UEFI lacks a flash tool
No, I could not install it on any USB-Stick. I tried to install Windows directly on one though. But I was reluctant try out how ‘reliable’ this would work. I will tinker with it when Lenovo releases the next BIOS-Update.
I am using Windows 10 pro x64 on my computer.
Some MS app said, Windows 11 will run on my machine, but now it won´t update.
On Win, I am using Canon Digital Professional (image editing software) and Mein Justiz Postfach (Webbrowser, Governikus Ausweis App and driver for Reiner SCT RFID reader).
Windows runs some minutes each day for sending legal post.
use Ventoy no installing just drag and drop
During the installation the device reboots several times. I’m afraid that something will go terribly wrong if the flashing gets interrupted.
But I think it is getting OT now…
The installation of what? Hirens boot over to a USB? or the actual Bios Update?
Fwiw, if you’re in the US you might explore TaxSlayer online. Needing to do my taxes was why I kept needing to upgrade my Mac os… until Apple wouldn’t let me update my legacy Apple hardware any longer.
Been using TaxSlayer ever since. Browser based. Works like a charm and super affordable for federal. ![]()
