I’m on EndeavourOS XFCE, running the LTS kernel (6.18.40-1-lts). I tried to update my nvidia-580xx-dkms and nvidia-580xx-utils packages today and got this error:

```auto
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
:: installing nvidia-580xx-utils (580.178.04-1) breaks dependency 'nvidia-580xx-utils=580.173.02' required by nvidia-580xx-dkms
```

I don’t recall seeing this error on previous updates.

There’s also a kernel update waiting in the official repo (6.18.40 → 6.18.44). I don’t want to install the kernel update until I resolve the nvidia issue in case the old nvidia driver is not compatible with the new kernel.

It’s annoying that I have to install the nvidia drivers from the AUR but that’s my only option for my GTX 1070.

How should I proceed in a way that is safe and doesn’t break my system?

Thanks

What command you using for update?

In any case. You can just remove old dkms module and utils packages and install new one.

It depends on whether I’m updating packages from the official repo or the AUR. I like to update them separately rather than all at once.

pacman -Syu for official packages

yay -Sua for AUR packages

Is it safe to remove the dkms and utils packages? Someone else told me that would result in my display going blank.

You should bee🐝 totaly fine if you install new ones right after deleting old ones.

In absolute worse scenario you can just open text console (tty) and install drivers there.

Easiest way is to go to uninstall both Nvidia builds utils and drivers packages, update system and in the same wash reinstall the Nvidia builds again.its a version mismatch .. not checked if it’s on ayr or on your side locally only. AUR is all up to date (just checked)

Assuming you have all the nvidia-580xx packages installed, simply run this update command to install them all at once, which should do the trick. This worked for me since I use these drivers as well.

```auto
yay -S nvidia-580xx-dkms nvidia-580xx-utils nvidia-580xx-settings opencl-nvidia-580xx libxnvctrl-580xx
```

I found the solution. I updated the drivers with `pacman -U` from the local build files.

`sudo pacman -U nvidia-580xx-dkms-580.178.04-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst nvidia-580xx-utils-580.178.04-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.zst`

That allowed them to update without triggering the dependency error.
