xinit xorg.conf.d

i can also boot normally again which i did

there seem to be a change on xorg causing that you need a switcher software sided to choose one or the other igpu/discrete on optimus systems.
And I see that you may do not have the xf86-video-intel driver installed? and only have the nvidia driver? that could cause the blank screen as system may try to use intel igpu and failed on that.

most common option:

after looking it up the xf86-video-intel driver is also installed.
this link is what i have tried before ands it caused my to nto be able to boot, tho what i did notice is that i still have bbswitch which apparently causes issues

the question is, do i need to do anything else other than uninstalling that specific compnent before i can continue with this short guide?

guide say that:

Warning:

  • be careful with the packages “acpi_call” and “bbswitch“.
they will make the system unstable or it will not boot anymore.

it can be that optimus-manager is not showing up in GTK environments (I do not know why) but users say in this cases that optimus-manager-qt is working nice.

to clarify since your quote from the link was what prompted the previous post, are my two options here that
a. delete bbswitch and use optimus-manager or
b. keep bbswitch and use optimus-manager-gt instead?

i mention to things only, that having bbswitch and / or acpi_call installed can cause issues with optimus-manager ( optimus-manager-qt is depending on optimus-manager) so using optimus manager needs to have them uninstalled, if it does not work for you.
bbswitch and acpi_call are both optional dependencies for optimus-manager so not needed in all cases.

ooh i see i have just missunderstood than, i will uninstall bbswitch and see how it goes

no dice, even after removing bbswitch i had the same porblem
after removing it again i had the same notif telling me i dont have hardware acceleration turned on

you need to switch with the tool from tray to the discrete gpu:

sadly impossible, as i cant get into the desktop, neither with normal boot nor with nomodeset as long as optimus is installed

@AmandaONeill I am going to suggest that you give this kernel parameter a try. You do not need to be on your desktop to add it.

acpi_osi='Windows 2018'

Sometimes the black screen is caused by an ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) error.

To add the parameter:

  1. Press “E” on the grub screen and find the line with the “quiet” parameter.

  2. Replace the word “quiet” with the parameter acpi_osi='Windows 2018'.

  3. Press F-10 to boot your computer.

This will not change the grub config permanently. If you find that this parameter works, then you will need to add it to grub.

could it be that nvidia-discrete-gpu is disabled inside efi-firmware (Bios) ?

sadly did not work

i tried to find this or any nvidia setting in my bios for that matter but did not find anything

and here is the full notif i have now after installing the nvidia driver via the recommend methodScreenshot from 2020-12-30 17-49-22
