GPU change

Greeting everyone!

I’m in the process of upgrading my gaming PC (mini ITX with Ryzen 5 5600X / 32Gb DDR4 RAM / 2Tb NVME / GTX 1660Ti Aero) from a small case to a slightly bigger one, due to increased temperatures.

So I am now looking into a new GPU, as the new case can accommodate larger models.

My question is, do I need to reinstall my OS after swapping GPUs ? I am not sure if I’ll stay on NVIDIA or swap to AMD..

You must uninstall the graphics driver before removing the installed GPU.

Thank you for your answer. Is it necessary, even if using the same vendor (NVIDIA) ?

As far as I know, if it’s same brand and Nvidia, generally no.

Try if your system boots up after installing new card. If it doesn’t boot, you can chroot into it and fix things up.

But kernel should detect your hardware.

When the vendor of the GPU is changed - Nvidia to AMD or Intel, then the graphics driver must uninstalled.

If the vendor does not change, then you can keep the driver installed.

There is no need to uninstall your graphics driver beforehand. At worst, you won’t get any display output from your GPU, which shouldn’t be a problem if your CPU has a display output (not sure if that particular Ryzen model has onboard graphics), or you can switch back to your old one.

If you change vendors, of course you’ll need to install the driver of the new vendor and ideally you’ll uninstall the no longer needed driver. If you remain with the same vendor, you shouldn’t need to do anything, assuming your currently installed driver is compatible with your new hardware.

Yes. But you said that when you remove card, you have to uninstall drivers. This is bad advice.
