Theming is just aesthetics and even though this is one of the main reasons use KDE I can’t run down GNOME, it is a nice DE just not for me anymore which is ok, I have plenty of other choices
Here’s that section in my .bash_profile I use when I want to force GTK4 to “behave”
(just to show the command, Theyre all commented out for now but, you get the idea.)
# ============================================================
# The commands below are for forcing GTK-4 to act as expected.
# They are intended for debugging, but seem to be working OK.
# ============================================================
#
# export GTK_THEME=Kripton
# export GTK_THEME=Material-Black-Blueberry-BE
# export GTK_THEME=Material-Black-Cherry-BE
# export GTK_THEME=Material-Black-Lime-BE
# export GTK_THEME=Material-Black-Mango-BE
# export GTK_THEME=Material-Black-Pistachio-BE
# export GTK_THEME=Material-Black-Plum-BE
#
#
# The command below will force XFCE4 to use dark mode on GTK-4 apps.
# ===================================================================
export ADW_DEBUG_COLOR_SCHEME=prefer-dark
Regarding theming on GNOME, it is unquestionably limited. All Gnomies, such as myself, have this saying: if you like ricing, GNOME is not the DE for you, GNOME is for those who want to get their job done (don’t take this as an offense).
However you can mod it yourself (the color), using Gradience: https://github.com/GradienceTeam/Gradience
No offense taken. As for me, it’s not necessarily a ricing thing. I just wanted options available to make things a bit more uniform in appearance. Some apps, Firefox as an example (and there are others), don’t quite look right. Like they’re using an older Aidwata with a beige, generic, dated look. I did, however, find something to fix that. I’m using adw-gtk3. And every single app blends perfectly now.
Just in case you installed it manually, I thought I would mention you can install it from the AUR.
Yep, I installed via AUR.
I think you should definitely this:
I wish at least they allowed theming the panel as before (I use Dash to Panel). I loved the semi-transparent blue theme from Flat Remix, now I have this ugly black bar with gray popups…
I use Dash To Panel as well. Does what I need and looks great.
That’s the top bar you’re talking about, right? Yeah, I wish that was could be themed. Not a fan of the solid black. Hopefully that will change in the near future.
