GNOME 42 has been a Nightmare!

Yeah…by the same token though, some of the criticism HAS been toxic. Toxicity benefits no one here. People need to provide constructive criticism, and the devs need to be willing to accept it as people wanting to participate with them, work with them, and help improve their product. I’m concerned there might be too much bad blood on both sided by now though…

I’ll admit that most of my “toxicity” has been in response to others in the community being flippant towards real issues. I’ve had to step back a little and learn not let one or two errant comments derail what I’m trying to get accomplished. It’s getting harder and harder because some of the issues I’m running into are just plain ridiculous. I wouldn’t have to go through 90% of them if a GNOME developer hadn’t decided to remove a feature that’s on all other modern desktops. Just being different to be different makes no sense to me. I can and will defend being different because that’s just the way you are, but will not defend going out of your way to be different just to be difficult.

That being said, I have now have a very good hybrid of the GNOME desktop with extensions and some KDE Plasma applications, like Dolphin, adding back much needed functionality that vanilla GNOME and its applications are lacking.

why not just use KDE?
I don’t like GNOME so I rarely use it. I use Plasma, MATE, LXQt and Budgie instead.
:enos: offers 14 different editions, there must be something other than GNOME that ou would like

Pantheon and Deepin come close, Budgie too. I can understand not wanting to mix and match between GTK and Qt though. And i don’t think i trust Deepin very far.

We don’t offer these

Edit: Sorry for the long history lesson. I use GNOME strictly on one machine: My Surface Pro 8 tablet PC. GNOME has some advantages that can’t be ignored on it. See the rest of the post…

I’ve always had a soft spot for GNOME and KDE. I’ve used both since their 1.x days (meaning that I have used KDE longer since it came out a year before GNOME). I left KDE completely for GNOME 2.0, but went back to KDE 3.x when GNOME developers started removing features after GNOME 2.3. When the disaster that was KDE 4.0 came out, I tried to go back to GNOME, but was so upset by the lack of features that used to be there that I switched to XFCE for a while. I returned to KDE when Plasma 5.4.x was released and stayed with it every since (21 straight major releases!). In between that time I got really excited about the addition of extensions for GNOME 3.x, but didn’t like the fact that they were constantly breaking and lacked official support, which hasn’t really been addressed yet for GNOME 40, 41, and 42.

There are lot of things to like about GNOME on a tablet device, like my Surface Pro 8. The larger and somewhat configurable applications menu, touch gestures, ambient light detection and rotation support out of the box, and better virtual keyboard support (although the keyboard layout leaves a lot to be desired). However, it’s a little like death by a thousand cuts, as GNOME is missing a lot of features that all modern tablet OSes (iPadOS, Android, ChromeOS, Windows 11) have, requiring the use of the buggy, unsupported extensions, and GNOME has some weird touch related bugs.

I definitely will not be using GNOME on my 17 inch gaming laptop. It’s definitely not worth it on a large, non-touchscreen device. That’s KDE Plasma and Windows domain for me!

For good reason in the case of Deepin. Pantheon… still thinking on that one. I hope EOS picks up the new COSMIC DE when it’s ready though.

I would love to see EOS support as many desktops as possible. Just like there is no such thing as a one size/type fits all car, house, phone, appliance, etc, there is also no one desktop that meets everyone’s needs. I stuck with Linux for so long because I like having a choice. I will definitely continue to support any distribution that gives me as many choices as possible.

I don’t understand why you are airing all these issues about Gnome here. This is not the Gnome forum. EndeavourOS are not the Gnome developers. Why are you still going on about this?

I was answering some questions posed to me and/or adding to what others posted. My issues with GNOME 42 are minor now and I’ve asked for help on those issues in another post. Please feel free to close this thread. It’s gotten huge and the conversation has drifted past my original intent.

I will close it and i ask that you not continue bashing Gnome based on your own experience and or views in any other posts. If you need help or advice on Gnome I’m sure there are those users who can help you or give you their honest opinion based on their experiences using Gnome on EndeavourOS. We do have many Gnome users here that get along quite well with EndeavourOS Gnome. Thank you for your understanding as we move forward.
