Well, A.I. in general isn’t going anywhere. A.I. does have its place in today’s world, Linux or otherwise. Like just about anything else, it can be abused. Utilizing A.I. in general is not a bad thing. It’s how you use it. A.I. (whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or Anthropic’s Claude) is what YOU make it, how you use it, and if you’re competent enough to realize to always to double-check things.
Indeed.
Pretty much the same for me. Erik Dubois is one of the good guys.
Exactly. ArcoLinux was a different animal than what Kiro seems to be. The ArcoLinux mission was about preparing folks for Arch and was more of a learning journey than just another Arch-based distro. I believe it was the “teaching” along with maintaining the distro itself that overwhelmed Erik.
Having said all that, I think I’m going to install Kiro on the ThinkPad and see what Kiro is all about.
Installed Kiro on the ThinkPad. And, yeah… it’s a lot. Erik’s special tools and apps, his scripts and configurations, and his curated selection of other apps, tools, themes, icons, and such. Arco-ish, for sure. But Kiro definitely has its own identity. Eager to tinker now.
And that’s a bit too much for me. That’s why I prefer the EndeavourOS approach: keeping things simple, providing a few tools that make life easier for the user, while still leaving plenty of room to shape it into our own Arch system without having to go through all the pain of doing it the “Arch way.”
I hear ya. And I get it. But I love to tinker. And as a secondary machine, I get to play more. Most of the tools and scripts are very useful. There is an abundance of themes and icons included that I could do without; that’s about it.
I used to run PCBSD back in the day. It had some limitations which is what kept me on Linux. I’ve wondered how BSD has fared since those times but haven’t bothered to really get off my laziness to try it out.
Well, I “spun the wheel of distros.” Went to Distrowatch and searched for Arch-based distros. Closed my eyes and scrolled up and down and hit left-click. I ended up with PrismLinux. A lesser-know distro, it seems. I’ve installed on the ThinkPad and so far, I gotta say… pretty damned nice!
Finishing up basic theming and installing apps. I’ll post in the Share Your Desktop topic shortly.
I’d seen it before but hadn’t tried it yet.
The best arch distros I’ve found so far are EOS and Big Linux.
I’ve tried CachyOS, Garuda, BlueStar, Kiro, Manjaro, and Artix.
I have another drive that isn’t hosting anything right now so might try it out there.
Have Ezarcher and XeroLinux on the list also for trying out.
