Last week, my Asus P8Z77-LX gave me a blue death screen and rebooted fine. On Monday, the UPS shut down complaining of short circuit on load side.
Yesterday alll efforts to revive the motherboard failed to force it back into the BIOS
I bited the bullet and ordered $3400 worth of parts to rebuild my WS. I was shocked that the 64GB of RAM cost is 1140$
The new endeavour begins …

The old parts replaced will be salvaged to build my 12 yrs son a new PC

14 years. Wow. I hope I will be able to emulate it. A good endeavour. Helps to reduce carbon foot print. We need to reduce our consumption. Our pale blue dot can only take so much.
Blue Ray? What is that of any use these days? Even Sony and other game studios have said that they wont be distributing any more games via optical drives.

If it’s any consolation, 1MB of RAM in our 386DX40 circa 1991, cost AUD$100 per 1MB SIMM. We had 8MB of RAM and that was considered fairly lavish at the time.
That equates to approximately AUD$1,935 / USD$1,360 for 8MB of RAM today, if we adjust for inflation.

What CPU/GPU did you buy?
Nice to see someone get more than a decade out of a piece of gear. I still have the parts for fully functional rigs built on a AMD 8350 and a Intel e3-1241v2 that were in service for 10+ years until 2 years ago when I decided to upgrade. Still thinking about sticking them in a case and using them as kubernetes agent nodes … but the power draw usually talks sense into me.
Since my switch to Niri / DMS the RAM usage barely scratches more than 13GB of RAM utilization on my rig. And that does includes 15 permanently browser tabs that are pinned / loaded at startup of my system, including YouTube playback for most of the time.
Therefore, I’d be totally fine with an 16GB RAM configuration. My decision on 32GB of RAM when I threw together that rig 2 years ago was solely a decision on not downgrading on the capacity of my previous system that had 24GB altogether. (Dual Xeon X5670, Westmere EP , 6 channels of DDR3 1333 MHz, 3 channels per CPU socket; which came to live as a Hackintosh imitating a 1st Gen Mac Pro of the Mid 2010 specifications).
On a different note, that workstation still does exist in deep storage… Mostly retired it due to inefficiency reasons. 2x X5670 with 95Watt of TDP simply won’t idle at the same wattage as a Ryzen 5 5600 in eco mode (45 Watt TDP down). At idle my current machine is somewhere in the range of 10 Watts of continuous power draw.
And that’s essentially the gist of the newest architecture benefits : efficiency.
I’ve still got a 2008 MacPro that I use for a foot rest but it does like ArchBang. When I plug in the power outlet it just comes on! It’s a rather painful endeavour … to run the old Big Mac and previous attempts to get Endeavouros or an Archinstall didn’t show much love, even after blasting its dusty insides with an airgun … but the old metal monster does enjoy ArchBang … slowly. Works better as a foot rest.

Over the last 2-days, I rebuilt my WS. The moment of truth was when I turned the power switch for the first, it was alive!

I had only to edit fstab to comment the SSD/HDD that I removed from the build.
I moved back the WS from the build area (Living room), back to my office and life is beautiful again.
Siince I added a new PCIe4 NVMe Samsung 990 Pro 1T, to the primary NVMe slot, I will have to bit-copy my WD Black 1T to the Samsung NVMe and user the WB as Timeshift backup and .cache dir.

My system is now 7 years old, so hoping it’ll last as long as yours since there’s no way my underemployed ass will be able to afford new build in any near future.
I’ve tended to get AIO coolers for top end CPU’s like yours. How do the temps hold up with air cooling?
My two computers are from 2013/2014 but suit my needs for now, no issues running KDE and GNOME respectively with the latest kernel. I could replace but if they are working fine, I haven’t been able to rationalize the purchases and don’t want to scrap what I have.
I had a psu that recently failed. An EVGA after I turned the wattage up on my 6800 otherwise I’ll be using what I got maybe for all of time. Given linux is best for old hardware and I dont have interest in modern games.
