EndeavourOS do not start again after update

Hello everyone,

I am writing to you cause I have a problem. My Endeavor is not starting anymore.
I have a dual boot with windows. When I start Endeavor I can see terminal output but it goes to fast to read something. But all looks green or blue, then it just stop on a black screen with “-”. From there I can open the terminal with ctrl+alt+f3. I tried to update all packages (pacman -Syyu --overwrite “*” $(pacman -Qqn) from here but I have no internet connection there (even I am connected with cable, ping does not work also(. So I flash a new usb stick with endeavor, try to boot from there and mount the brocken partition and did the same but still this error.

Can someone help me please ?

Update : I started on usb stick, mount with arch-chroot, did rebuild all packages, but after reboot still the same “-“ booting.

can you boot with US live iso Endevouros ,
open a terminal and a browser on this topic
do a arch-chroot and report

inxi -Fza
journalctl -b -1 -p4
exit ( to quit chroot )

have you a Nvidia video Card ? ( “-” blinking on left upper corner )

I do have a Nvidia video card, but the “-” is not blinking.

Here is the output of inxi:

[root@EndeavourOS /]# inxi -Fza

most of the report come from USB live iso Endevouros ,
i think you have to report logs ,AFTER Arch-root
https://discovery.endeavouros.com/system-rescue/arch-chroot/2022/12/

for send logs
see https://discovery.endeavouros.com/forum-log-tool-options/how-to-include-systemlogs-in-your-post/2021/03/

the blinking is nvidia drivers , is it a discret card or nvidia card on dedicaced pci ?
if possible , try to desactivate nvidia card ( to stay with only intel video )

the failed kernel come from USB live video card ( old kernel 6.9.6 )

Hello @Michel1
Could you try to use code tags around what you post from the output when you copy and paste. It makes it much easier to read.

Edit: It can be a as simple as using the preformatted text button or three ~~~ tilde or three ``` back ticks before and after what you paste.

It is a dedicaced pci, a laptop Nvidia T1200. I try to desactivate it but it told me that it failed because it could not communicate with the nvidia driver.

I did it after arch-root, here is how I mount it:

@ricklinux I use my text or ```bash as code tags, what should I do different _

It’s just looking different than what It used to show here so i thought maybe you weren’t using code tags. I don’t know what has changed but something has. It’s mostly the inxi command that looks different to me. But I tried it on my system and it looks the same as your output. :person_shrugging:

Your Nvidia GPU driver is nouveau instead of nvidia.
Can you show the output of command

pacman -Qs nvidia

There it is:

[root@EndeavourOS /]# pacman -Qs nvidia
local/egl-wayland 4:1.1.16-1
    EGLStream-based Wayland external platform
local/envycontrol 3.4.0-1
CLI tool for Nvidia Optimus graphics mode switching on Linux
local/libvdpau 1.5-3
    Nvidia VDPAU library
local/libxnvctrl 560.35.03-1
    NVIDIA NV-CONTROL X extension
local/nvidia-dkms 560.35.03-2
    NVIDIA drivers - module sources
local/nvidia-hook 1.5.1-1
    pacman hook for nvidia
local/nvidia-inst 24-1
Script to setup nvidia drivers (dkms version) in EndeavourOS
local/nvidia-settings 560.35.03-1
Tool for configuring the NVIDIA graphics driver
local/nvidia-utils 560.35.03-2
    NVIDIA drivers utilities

You could try uninstalling nvidia-dkms, then install nvidia and nvidia-lts. Make sure you have kernel headers too.

Edit: using command inxi -Fzac0 might help.

Thank you for your answer,

Here is the new output of -Qs nvidia:

[root@EndeavourOS /]# pacman -Qs nvidia
local/egl-wayland 4:1.1.16-1
    EGLStream-based Wayland external platform
local/envycontrol 3.4.0-1
CLI tool for Nvidia Optimus graphics mode switching on Linux
local/libvdpau 1.5-3
    Nvidia VDPAU library
local/libxnvctrl 560.35.03-1
    NVIDIA NV-CONTROL X extension
local/nvidia 560.35.03-6
    NVIDIA drivers for linux
local/nvidia-hook 1.5.1-1
    pacman hook for nvidia
local/nvidia-inst 24-1
Script to setup nvidia drivers (dkms version) in EndeavourOS
local/nvidia-lts 1:560.35.03-6
    NVIDIA drivers for linux-lts
local/nvidia-settings 560.35.03-1
Tool for configuring the NVIDIA graphics driver
local/nvidia-utils 560.35.03-2
    NVIDIA drivers utilities

and here the output of inxi for the headers, I yay linux-header again:

[root@EndeavourOS /]# inxi -Fzac0

But it looks like the Kernel version is not the lastest no?

That is the same kernel version as you posted earlier. So have you not updated lately? Current kernel is 6.10.10-arch1-1

This is an HP laptop with Optimus. Does it have UEFI Bios settings for the graphics that are hybrid, integrated or dedicated?

Yeah I know, but I do not understand why. I just uninstall and reinstall it but still not update. Look:

I am not sure to understand the second question. With the command dmicode I could found nothing talking about the graphics in the bios. Could you help me with a command please ?

you just need to reboot , inxi show only kernel from USB live iso that permit chroot

You are running the ISO, not the installed system.
So you need to arch-chroot into the installed system when running the corrective commands, otherwise you are only “fixing” the ISO.

Yes I know. But it is because the install system don’t boot. And when I go into the terminal with ctrl+alt+f3 after the non-blinking «-» I don’t have any internet even I’m connected with cable, don’t have access to arch-chroot too…

That sounds like reinstall is the reasonable thing to do.
It seems quite hard and time consuming to troubleshoot.

Thanks for trying aha, will go for a reinstallation then. Do you know if there is a way to keep files and installed stuffs, or it has to be complete reset ?
Additionally, do you have any idea of what has caused my issue? Just to make sure I don’t do it again

If you have a separate /home partition, that should keep the data inside it, as long as you don’t overwrite that partition.
Anyway, backing up your personal data (to an external drive) before doing anything else is always a good idea.

It is hard to tell the real reason (or reasons), there may be many alternative reasons, for example a disk problem.

To save a list of your explicitly installed packages, you can do e.g.

pacman -Qnqe > packages.txt

and save that file to an external disk. Then you can use the list to install the same packages into the reinstalled system.

new iso has been made for september ,
is it OK with latest iso ?
