EndeavourOS has appeared on the Steam Survey Charts!
as a non-gamer the full pic is fascinating-
For people that use Steam 96% are on WIN 11/10/7 with bizarrely 7 doing better than 10? 7 rocked anyway.
Mac at barely 2% of Steam gamers polled was baffling to me but I don’t know crap about Mac these days.
How many steam voters and what where the poll questions I wonder? (Vicar did not go link-crazy to investigate although I crave context).
as for Linux…the what-I-believe-to-be-a-small-pool-of-voters chose Arch + 2 Arch derivatives as what they game on most which was very interesting…out of 6 flavours…would have never guessed.
I use Steam, I wasn’t requested to fill in any survey for this, the last time Steam showed a message about opting in to fill in the survey for me was years ago now, so I have no idea if my system is included in this although apparently the survey is done every month.
At least when I last done the survey it pops up a dialogue box, you click that you want to opt in, and then Steam automatically collects your system information and sends it to their database, so you don’t get to pick an OS or fill it in like a normal survey. No idea is Steam OS is classed as Arch on this.
thanks for all this context it makes more sense now. telemetry is valuable for stats, no doubt. As for your last sentence that’s very interesting.
Nice to see the purple in high esteem.
Same, it was a long time ago when steam asked me about the survey. If I recall correctly it only happened once. Maybe, they asked for consent for continuous polling when it happened the first time?
It’s strange, I’m sure I remember the message appearing three times for me in the past when I opted in but this was many years ago so I may be misremembering. I’ve had a look around online and seems no one knows how it’s triggered. Some say it’s random group of users selected each month, one person said randomly whoever logs in to the client on the 1st each month, apparently on Windows a registry edit can force it to appear, some have been on Steam for years and say they have never been asked to do a survey.
Kind of odd, I guess if it is a random selection then there may actually be more Linux Steam users than this and maybe all the new Steam users make it less likely, when I joined Steam I remember the peak number in the week of online users would be around 4-5 million, and now it’s around 35 million peak. Maybe I will bother Steam support at some point and may answer it if I’m lucky.
If you ever want to submit your system spec manually, just click on Help - System Report and submit. It’s all output in plain text for you so you can see exactly what’s being sent over. Loving the fact that I’m literally running a SteamDeck, - all AMD rig, with Plasma and Arch + Endeavour. Gaming has never been this good on Linux.
I sent this report over now as you mentioned. I thought this was just for their support team, but hopefully my system is now on their database in some way since I don’t think I am currently a part of the statistics.
No issues here either for gaming on Linux, every game I own has run and played correctly old and new (If 2021 is considered new still) with no negative performance compared to Windows on the games I have recently played.
There’s a separate monthly spec review that happens automatically, but the system report is effectively the same information as what you submit when you click on System Information - Compare Your Hardware
