I think it’s a case of managing expectations. Right on the front page:

> A basic installation ready to tweak
>
> No matter which method, DE or WM you choose, they all have one thing in common, a basic and almost bare-boned installation with a modest but powerful selection of terminal-operated apps to start your deep dive into an Arch-based system. To highlight some of those…

Then the advice I’ve been getting from other people saying it’s beginner friendly and a great alternative to Manjaro for that reason is a bunch of hokey

Thank you, I’m just really frustrated as I was told by some good friends of mine that Endeavour was a good noob-friendly distro. And I’ve seen it touted as such on articles online too.

Well it can be. You’re being told exactly what you need to do. It just requires some good will on your part and not much prior knowledge.

It took me about 2 hours before I could get to installing higher-level apps like Steam, Unity Hub, etc. Manjaro was about half that time. Even then I haven’t gotten SMB working.

It seems more like to me that I was misinformed regarding the ‘noob-friendliness’ of this distro. As much as I like the AUR I think I’m going to be switching to Kbuntu, I don’t have the time to go throught the rigamaroll of 2 hours to getting basic features working like SMB and bluetooth. I’m already going through hoops since it’s I’m working with a laptop that needs Optimus for reasonable battery life.

Exactly. I was a noob when I started using :enos:. The distro, along with the help of the community and my own research helped me learn about Linux and take control of my computer.

Don’t you have to go through the setup only once?

I’m using Manjaro. I was not able to set up Samba on it, and gave up eventually. I got to the conclusion it’s broken. It has nothing to do with the OS. Also BT is a matter where you could’ve gotten help in 5 minutes if you weren’t as entitled. You get what you put into it.

N00b friendly? No. It’s probably the easiest of the teminal oriented distributions but this is one of those cases where “easier” doesn’t mean “easy.” You still need to be willing to learn some under the hood stuff, and EOS has some tools to make the terminal (again) easier to use, but it doesn’t insulate your from it, and it’s still a relatively trim install that you have to build up from.

I would have no hesitation in recommending EndeavourOS as a second or third distribution for someone looking to take the next step in learning Linux and getting deeper into it. But i would have serious reservations about recommending it as a first distro in most cases (there are exceptions but they are exceptions rather than the rule).

If it took you that long to install Steam…i mean it’s “yay steam” at the command line if i remember right. Maybe EOS isn’t right for you. You could check out Garuda.

I would say arch based distros are all a bad fit for this situation. Wrong expectations and no will to learn.

Well for mobile you need the following: optimus-manager and prime. And I like to have optimus-manager-qt so I can visually confirm that optimus manager is working (because it does love to stop working on random occasions). And I was having some weird issues with prime completely borking my desktop environment on EOS.

School is starting in 2 days, I’m on the clock, I don’t have time to be messing with this stuff. I love linux, I really do, but sometimes I just need it to be a bootstrap for other applications for school and for it to do that simply and efficiently.

Maybe not a good time to switch operating systems? I try to be really conservative with my OS. I don’t switch OS on working systems that easily.

That’s totally fine, most people actually want that and there are several distros out there that satisfy this need.

Thanks for trying out :enos: . Maybe when you have more time to setup your system you can try configuring your system to your need on :enos: .

Manjaro forced my hand, my install, through updates, completely borked itself to the point of needing reinstall. And I’m really fed up with the poor QA behind the Manjaro dev team and the lack them keeping up with simple things like SSL certs. I really didn’t want to change distros, but I’m not going to spend my time investing in something that’s going to bite me in the ass when it counts.

I’m sorry if I came off condescending, I was under the impression by those who recommended EOS to me that it was noob friendly and ready to go out of the box. I love Arch and the AUR but the one distro that was supposed to be user-friendly on it kinda flopped for me.

When I did invest the time I really liked what I got, even if it wasn’t everything I needed, in fact battery life on EOS was particularly impressive. I just don’t have the time right now for it, unfortunately.

If you don’t mind, where did you get your information about Endeavour?? Unmatched expectations is definitely something that will cause people to be upset or feel betrayed while starting to use a new distro. If you’re new and it’s taking hours to setup simple things like bluetooth, you have unfortunately landed in the wrong place and I’m sorry you’re here. Kubuntu is definitely a more suitable distro and if your research pointed you here, I’d like to reach out to them and let them konw they are doing a disservice sending new users here.

Again - please share where you got that Endeavour was noob-friendly, I’d like to squash that.

As far as **user-friendly** - I would absolutely say it’s user friendly. It does all of that hard part of setting up a system. That’s pretty-user friendly. It doesn’t have a bunch of things for me to uninstall before I can use it, that’s user-friendly. It’s a very-user friendly distro. It’s unfortunately not “noob-friendly” as you put it, and hopefully never will be.

@Cornelius
If you think that setting up bluetooth is hard you ought to install Arch linux from scratch and set everything up yourself. Then maybe you’ll know just how user friendly EndeavourOS is!

EndeavourOS with KDE Plasma already comes with a bluedevil.
The only thing you need is to enable bluetooth service with a one command

> sudo systemctl enable bluetooth.service

With respect OP, feedback noted. If activating bluetooth and setting up SMB is a full stop impediment to using a distro than you probably don’t have time right now to entertain Endeavour or really any distro other than the basic “new user” distros. Even those will likely take some time commitment to do what you want. With a lack of sufficient time I would recommend using one of those or possibly just…well I won’t say it.
