Do we need both tracker and tracker3 packages installed?

I was going through my installed packages in Gnome when I noticed:

Do I need both?

  1. ‘tracker’ and ‘tracker3’.
  2. ‘tracker-miners’ and ‘tracker3-miners’.

I was reading through the overview which seems to indicated that tracker3 has a commandline tool.

I did a quick search on my system and also here:

https://archlinux.org/packages/?sort=&q=tracker&maintainer=&flagged=

I have neither tracker nor tracker-miners on my system and they seem not to be in the repos either.

I do not know where you are getting tracker and tracker-miners from. I can not find them in any repo and from what I understand they are old and obsolete. Therefore my system only has

tracker3 3.4.2-1
tracker3-docs 3.4.2-1
tracker3-miners 3.4.3-1

Also, it looks like GNOME has switched to tracker3 ever since 3.38:

I would run: pactree -r tracker and pactree -r tracker-miners to see if you have something on your system depending on them.

Also check for the orphans: pacman -Qtdq

Good Morning Everyone,

Sounds like we all came across similar conclusions about the tracker and tracker-miners packages (thanks for the 2nd and 3rd set eyes.

More about tracker here (for others who are like me reading the forums):

So with a rested brain, I ended up checking the laptop I built for my wife last month and it only had the tracker3 and tracker3-miners installed.

I also did check the dependencies as recommended:

❯ pactree -r tracker 
tracker
└─tracker-miners

~ 
❯ pactree -r tracker-miners
tracker-miners

In the Gnome Gitlab I did notice when then transitioned to tracker3, that not all programs were ready. So this is why they had the older one hanging around. But as@pebcak mentioned … looks like they fully transitioned over.

So the end solution is just to remove the packages as nothing needed them:

❯ sudo pacman -Rns tracker tracker-miners
[sudo] password for user:
