For anyone wondering why this is out of date.
I’ve been trying to make the latest version of plex-desktop work here. But sadly have an issue with it getting stuck at the first loading screen with no error logs anywhere. If anyone can help out, please do! They have updated FFMPEG, MPV (and maybe QT) and their forks are no longer binary compatible with the arch packages, requiring the use of the forked versions included in the package.
(The same issues are valid for plex-htpc since they’re essentially the same app)
I know the Flatpak version exists because I was using it before but I had recently switched to the AUR version. I just installed the PlexHTPC using Flatpak and I dislike this new player a lot when you compare it to old the Plex desktop player because it doesn’t have the “dashboard” functionality. And it doesn’t have the functionality that allows you to manage your Plex server settings and they didn’t even make “original quality” playback the default for this new player but that’s a whole different discussion. I’ll just uninstall it and use the web-browser to use Plex on my pc now instead.
We lost a lot when the rather ancient xbox version was ported, with options for many themes etc… however, getting any kind of ‘original quality’ using the browser is tough when it won’t handle multi-channel audio.
It does actually play everything on my screen at full quality manageable by the monitor/TV - and really, once you set up the server there shouldn’t be any need to set server settings in the player. They should already have been set up via the server web-UI.
The most annoying issue for me was that if I open it up side-by-side, it’s still limited by 16:9 ratio for the library view, as I preferred the old version’s ability to fill the window vertically with icons when scrolling through.
Once you get over the initial ‘kickback’ reaction to the application having changed it’s behaviour and appearance, it becomes quickly evident that it’s much better to go with the flow and enjoy the latest updated version - and it really does work very well.
I know it exist and I used it before but I got the impression PlexHTPC is the one you should be using and that Plex Desktop will be deprecated sometime. I decided to just create a shortcut for a page that launches the webapp, since I switched all my Flatpak packages over to default repo packages and AUR package so it would be kind of a disappointment just to have to install 5 dependency flatpaks for one flatpak application. Thanks though!
