Compiling Mesa 22.2 with codec support (the easy way)

We have been speaking about this, there is a possibility (Looks like) that it will be required to add the build flags to have hardware encode/decode support from version 22.2 forward.

yes, and the maintainers already did actively add the flags:

Yup, the maintainers have made the usual mesa good to go.

Now we’re just waiting to see which way Flatpak will go and I’ll update the thread to cover if building mesa-git Flatpak with the codecs is necessary

You can configure Flatpak to use system drivers, well, at least for Nvidia. Maybe there is a way to do the same for Mesa.

Flatpak cant use your system drivers, it just pulls the matching driver from Flathub so that flatpak and your system drivers are the same. This is due to how flatpak and its sandboxing work so sadly not an option.

Following this issue Flatpak seems to want to go the way of Fedora and Suse and disable it on default, currently up for debate if an alternative will be provided for those who want video. Mesa-git extension currently has codecs disabled

Mesa 22.2 now is in the official repos with codec support.
