Cassini installation with "questionable UEFI firmware

So I booted an Archlinux ISO and used fdisk to write a new GPT partition table. Then I use the Ventoy/cassini in grub2 boot mode and it worked and I’ve reinstalled EOS Cassini.

Okay, here’s some more data for those playing along at home.

I burned the Cassini ISO to a DVD +R optical disc. It booted fine on a AMD Ryzen 5 desktop.

On my MacBookPro 8,1 which has a built-in DVD reader, I inserted the DVD as soon as I powered up. I hit the Option key as soon as the tone played. It took a while, but 2 images of DVDs showed up on the screen. One labeled Windows and one labeled EFI Boot. I chose EFI Boot and it booted into the installer.

I went back and tried again and this time I tried the DVD icon labeled Windows. It took awhile but then proceeded to boot to the installer. No kernel panic, if just worked slowly as DVDs always did.

we do not use grub on the ISO… it is ventoy parsing the systemd-boot entries to be loaded with their internal grub setup not sure if you can edit boot options inside ventoy

so only the grub2 ventoy mode works…
will panic log look the same on rebuild ISO?

To me it looks like this is the issue… it fails to uncompress the image needed …it is not saying it can not find it… and it seems not to fail using the grub2 mode from ventoy stick…

and zstd is used for the initramfs… we could try using another one…
Or just use dracut for the ISO too, (@dalto  )

I’m trying to point out what it say’s how it works.

a new ISO using xz compression instead for the initrd on the ISO:

Still kernel-panics on my MacBookPro8,1

original archiso boot fine?

Let me summarize what boots or not on my MacbookPro8,1:

  • Original EOS Cassini 22-12 on USB flash key Kernel panics.
  • Original EOS Artemis 22-09 on USB flash key booted to Calamari install screen.
  • All ISO’s posted in this topic kernel panic.

Only Cassini ISO that boots is the Original put on my Ventoy USB key and booted with Ventoy grub2 mode only.

So i guess look at the differences? & narrow it down.

could be the ucode image? and it is not getting loaded if choosing grub2 ventoy boot?

It’s above my pay grade to figure this out. Since I’m retired, a lot falls into that category. :grinning:

Well i don’t have any Mac’s so i can’t do it.

I have the Macbook, but don’t know where to start looking. Even though I worked for Intel for 30 years doesn’t mean I have a clue why the PC booting process is so screwed up.
