good luck then. firefox had a list of good suggestions to try for this. see what happens after your scan.
funny stuff
You do tried to start browser from a terminal, and try download something
It could show error about⌠or run terminal with journal aside: journalctl -f
to see if it tracks any error or warningâŚ
Thanks for your reply @joekamprad
It appears to have been a rootkit, but it was unidentified by rkhunter.
I am installing a fresh Cassini Nova now
Not sure how to check my external devices, since these rootkits can be pretty darned sneaky about hiding in plain sight.
Where did you get a rootkit from?
take care to check security inside your local network⌠and setup. RouterâŚ
ok, Iâm back (kind of). Maybe I should start another thread, but I want to know how I can detect this in future?
Maybe having unprotected sex
I donât go on sketchy sites, so I am at a loss to know. Since rkhunter could not identify it and all the well known rootkits were NOT FOUND, I am baffled. How to protect the system for the future is now my main concern.
I see you are reinstalling so this is probably closed but I was wondering what convinced you you had a rootkit/virus? I was unconvinced by the evidence. What tipped the scales that you reinstalled?
Also you never said if you did Firefoxâs recommended 4-5 steps to cure the unable-to-download thingy?
validâhardware/firmware seems to be the new attack vector for the nasties (according to cursory reading). research how to mitigate this
OK, I reinstalled. I ran earlier rkhunter tests and it gave a clean bill of health on the known rootkits, but suspected 2 rootkits without identifying them. It was qbout that time I usually do a clean install. All my data is backed up, so itâs just setting it up with my peculiar taste. In the meantime Gnome 45 hit, so that came with itâs own challenges for the extensions that are not compatible.
Yep, and that those steps did not help. It seems each time I changed to a new download folder in profile, it reverted to ~/Downloads. I know there was something serious affecting Firefox due to waiting dialogs each time I opened a tab or did anything. To test it, I installed Waterfox G6.0.1, and had the same issues except the timing out.
I will post this a a solution just t close it. Thanks for the tips.
