Cannot connect second monitor

Hello community ,

I am new and I just installed EndeavourOS with Cinnamon. Everything seems good but as soon as I connect my second monitor everything freezes. The second monitor is just showing random stripes. I can still move the mouse but windows are not clickable and I can’t use the keyboard.

During the installation process with Casini the two monitors worked fine. Just the resolution in the laptop’s monitor where super small and could not be changed.

Does someone has an idea, what could be the cause and how to handle it?

Thanks

Welcome @nlea
Is it possible for you to post your hardware? That would be helpful for those trying to help you. Please post the url link from this command.

inxi -Faz | eos-sendlog

Edit: Did you try going into display and checking anything there to set extended or mirror?

hey @ricklinux ,

thanks for your reply. This is the link to the hardware I use: https://0x0.st/oFyU.txt

I can’t go into the Settings for the Displays. As soon as I connect the second monitor, I can still move the mouse courser but can’t select anything and the keyboard won’t work neither. So with the second monitor connected I can’t run any commands in the terminal etc

So this is a laptop Dell XPS 9320. How is the other monitor connected?

Edit: Is it connected with USB-C to Display Port?

It is connected via HDMI cable using an adapter to connect to the usb-c. It worked fine on Fedora before as well as during the installation set up with Cassini…

Your hardware output shows this. Was the external monitor connected when you ran that command?

Monitor-1: eDP-1 mapped: eDP1 model: Sharp 0x1551 built: 2021
    res: 3840x2400 hz: 60 dpi: 336 gamma: 1.2 size: 290x180mm (11.42x7.09")
    diag: 340mm (13.4") ratio: 16:10 modes: 3840x2400

You would have to start looking at hardware information from logs to see what it shows unplugged and then plugged in. Other than trying another type of cable i don’t have an answer. Does the monitor have display port also? There are cables that are usb-c to hdmi or display port so you wouldn’t be using an adapter also. It worked on live ISO and Fedora? Have seen this before where things work on live ISO but then not when installed. It does happen with some hardware.

Also maybe you can give some logs with it plugged in on boot and without it plugged in on boot.
For both you could run

sudo dmesg | eos-sendlog
journalctl -b -0 | eos-sendlog

Could i see the output of these. You will have to post the output for these ones and use code tags around what you post.

Other than this i don’t have an outright answer to say do this and it will work.

Hey @ricklinux ,

Thanks for your help and sorry for the slow replying.

No it was not. As said above as soon as I connect the monitor I can’t use my keyboard and I also can’t select and click on anything in the UI. I can just move the mouse around. So it it kind of impossible to connect it to the second monitor and run commands in the terminal.

The one monitor at home does not have it but the one I have in the office does. Connecting to different monitors with different cables and the behavior stays the same…

And yes it worked before on Fedora and live ISO…

I can post the logs without being connected to the monitor due to mentioned issue above:

sudo dmesg | eos-sendlog
https://0x0.st/oFUc.txt

journalctl -b -0 | eos-sendlog
https://0x0.st/oFUu.txt

If you have an idea where the problem could set let me know. Thanks so much

Hardware looks okay I don’t see anything that shows a problem. If you can’t get a log when it’s plugged in then we can’t see what is happening.

I do know that most laptops are designed to support uscb-c to display port. Does your monitor have a display port input?

[ 0.279740] ACPI: USB4 _OSC: OS supports USB3+ DisplayPort+ PCIe+ XDomain+
[ 0.279740] ACPI: USB4 _OSC: OS controls USB3+ DisplayPort+ PCIe+ XDomain+

I’m not sure if hooking it to a usb-c to display port would solve the issue. But your monitor would have to have a display port input. Otherwise you would be having to get a usb-c to display port cable and then an adapter to fit the monitor for whatever port it is? If it’s only hdmi or dvi or vga?

I don’t know what to suggest really. I don’t want to suggest you buy asomething if it’s not going to work. But unfortunately how can you troubleshoot it?

Have you tried another hdmi cable. Also have you tried hooking it to the other usb-c port? I’m not sure if there is a designated usb-c for this?

Edit: The other thing you could try is hooking it up and run it on the live ISO and get the log with it hooked to the monitor if it works this way.

inxi -Faz | eos-sendlog
sudo dmesg | eos-sendlog
journalctl -b -0 | eos-sendlog

I could look at these but I’m not sure it will help me. :man_shrugging:

But we need the logs when breaking.
You can get logs from the previous (broken) boot, with

journalctl -b -1 --no-hostname --no-pager
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

So what you mean is connect it and boot and it will fail. Then disconnect it and boot and run the commands to get the logs needed?

Hopefully the OP reads this and provides the logs. I’m not sure what’s happening as it worked on the live ISO and another distro so maybe it is setting an improper xorg .conf or something on the install? I really don’t know. I don’t use multi monitor much although i have helped some here to fix some issues like this. :man_shrugging:

Hey both of you,

So I ran the command to extract the old log and it is indeed interesting. It is quiet long, so I can’t post the complete thing from the first command. This is anyhow the second one

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old

The cable is not the problem. I tried multiple cables and with different laptops they are working. Also note I tried different monitors. Using one with a display port input didn’t change anything…

You can run those commands and upload them and it makes it a lot easier to read through. I have a very hard time looking at info on the screen that has scrolling.

First commands you can do like this.

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old | eos-sendlog
journalctl -b -1 --nohost --no pager | eos-sendlog

If it were me i would be trying a usb-c to display port adapter that has the cable for display port.

You don’t have Windows installed also on this laptop? If so make sure fast startup feature in Windows power management is disabled.

Edit: You could also try this kernel parameter. Not sure if you are using grub or systemd boot

usbcore.autosuspend=-1

First thing you need to do is remove the intel driver and reboot. Your Alder Lake is too new for it.

yay -R xf86-video-intel

You can see this in the logs

Also, hardware rendering is not going to work with i965 as show in the log again

You will need modesetting with iris

This err = -71 is EPROTO error. which means usb packets are getting protocol errors and the usb connection is not initialized correctly.

This part is interesting, so Intel finally implemented DRM protection in their driver, there might be some issues regarding HDCP too. What is the model of the monitor that you are connecting to your laptop?

Have you tried with any older kernels? LTS might be too old, but maybe try with the kernel that works with installation environment.

Make sure the cable is actually working. I had one that would work sometimes and other times not. I thought it could be the video or some other driver. Is the Hardware compatible?
