I think also if the you were going with a Commercial Linux like Red Hat or Open Suse it would depend on cost and what you get for that cost. I know that Red Hat Commercial is pretty expensive and i wonder how it compares to Open Suse & Cannonical because they compete in the same space i would think. Doesn’t sound like there are any other considerations. Microsoft isn’t cheap either. It’s nice to see more businesses choose Linux.
When it comes to my company Red Hat vs Cannonical vs Open Suse, true price is important but other factors as well like privacy, Cannonical with the integrated amazon search in one version of ubuntu is a big red flag for my team and other “questionable” issues in the past, Red Hat is now own by IBM, some of the more senior engineers have an issue with IBM pre 1990, the mean reason they used BSD in 1984 was IBM, IBM was strong opponent to open source so .. We only entertained the idea about Microsoft but never read any details, but list is long, Windows is out of the picture simply.
Red Hat and Suse are powerful and money making companies 1B$+ not just on a SME company.
Suse is a great company and they build good stable product,
I have being using their Open Suse T rolling release FREE version that works great as an example.
We did host our services to TrueOS with pay support to a company, but TrueOS is discontinued back in 2018 start of 2019, we got extended support that ends soon via Apple (complicated to explain details).
yes TrueOS is BSD, but the companies that offer support are few and most of the modern software that our sub contractors make is in Linux, hence Linux is a logical migration we need to do by end of 2021.
We’ll recode what is possible, but some legacy service will have to stay as they are in pure bsd scripts they run well in Linux or docker or VM, they will be replaced next year. same reason we have to host a legacy service in an OpenVMS on a VM emulating alpha digital server, until recoding is done.
true, I cannot speak in a public forum, about specific companies, but from my list of business contact business: b2b services we are using, clients, partners and sub contractors: based in Europe, North America and ME Israel, I can say that about 70% use Linux, 25% MacOS and less then 5% use Windosw. 500 of the fastest super computers in the world use Linux, all of them just in FYI.
Thank you all for your time, advice and valuable feedback I’ll consider it.
