BTRFS speed?

I just got the Mrs a “new” HP laptop i5 3rd gen with 16Gb Ram (long story, but she wants DVD drives which cannot be found in new machines). And so installed afresh atop a new 2TB Crucial SSD, with BTRFS rather than the old EXT4 she had on a 1 TB SSD. The system starts really quickly, no issue. But opening most apps seems to take forever (>60s for LOWriter, Thunderbird), and yet there are no errors logged.
So is it a mistake to use BTRFS on this system, or is there something else going on here?

Probably not the filesystem.

Unless you are using gnome, make sure you don’t have xdg-desktop-portal-gnome installed.

Cinnamon only.

Check if you have that package installed. If you do, remove it.

It often gets installed because it is the first one alphabetically.
