Blank, unresponsive screen after boot

Hi,

I’ve been attempting to resolve an issue on booting after I updated using yay yesterday. The main issue is that after systemd boot selection, my screen is blank & unresponsive.

I managed to get into arch-chroot on live USB, and I installed the linux-lts and linux-lts-headers, as well as made the new grub config - but when I select the 6.1 LTS from grub, it gives me an error that is something along the lines of “Kernal panic - not syncing: Init = not found”.

Please try to use code tags around the output you post. You said you made a new grub config? Did you run the update grub command?

Edit: Are you sure you are running grub because systemd-boot is the default now unless you select grub on install.

Gotcha, I updated the original post to code tags. I used the default install of the OS, so you’re right it must be systemd-boot.

If it is sytemd-boot then you could try reinstall kernels command. I’m not sure what you did for creating a new grub config?

sudo reinstall-kernels

Edit: I assume you’ll need to arch-chroot if unable to boot and or not able to get into a tty?

Edit2: You can also check if it is systemd-boot with

sudo bootctl is-installed

Same issue after sudo reinstall-kernels and yes, I wasn’t able to get to get into tty. Just to confirm, the bootctl command returned yes.

Here is the LTS Kernel error in specific:
Kernel panic - not syncing: No working init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.

For the reinstall-kernels command, my boot/esp partition should be mounted on /mnt/efi, correct?

Are you asking if it should mounted or where it should be mounted? I think so. Did you check your fstab to see if the uuid matches.

Looks like I have the correct disk (the /efi one) mounted to /mnt/efi. It appears despite this, the issue is still there. My thought on installing the LTS kernel was that the update caused an issue with my system. Is there a command I need to do add a working init for the LTS kernel?

I don’t have that much experience with systemd-boot. Probably better if i let the expert @dalto have a look at this. I don’t want to send you down the wrong path.

Edit: Not sure if you can change the title of the topic from grub to boot?

Hopefully either @dalto chimes in or someone with more systemd-boot knowledge. I mainly am using grub which has had issues in the not too distant past also but for me on btrfs it’s been good.

You’ll find that I ended up installing grub as well on my solution finding journey before realizing the difference between it and systemd-boot, I will figure out how to safely remove it later.

Are you sure you aren’t booting off that broken grub now?

I would try running bootctl install from within the chroot.

I did attempt it earlier, but I’ve been using the “Linux Boot Manager” to boot since this process started, which I think is systemd-boot?

Here is the response from that:
