Black Screen on boot after Nvidia Driver Installation

Yes, sorry. ELI5 is short for “Explain it like I’m 5.” This is a new level of linux diving I’ve entered into to try and solve this :stuck_out_tongue:. Thank you for the resources, it gives me things to learn from.

Yes, I can access my TTY terminal when I get the blinking cursor (though, its ctrl+alt+f4. Took me too long to figure that out…). Thats how I’ve been getting all these logs.

And I have disabled TLP for now, no real difference on boot up procedure, but its good to reduce variables.

Okay, so you can get to a TTY. What happens if you type startx

which was under the direction of @joekamprad earlier in the debugging to try and figure out why Xorg wasn’t starting.

Okay. What do you have in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d folder?

Something is preventing your display driver from initializing.

Looks like modesetting causes issues.
Could you try this kernel parameter list:

  nomodeset i915.modeset=0 nouveau.modeset=0 nvidia-drm.modeset=1

or some combination of them?

Do you want the contents of the logs in the directory, or the contents of the directory?

edit: contents contain…

> ls /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
00-keyboard.conf 99-nvidia.conf

It’s probably nvidia-drm but could be any as you say.

First. Add the kernel parameters that @manuel mentioned above. Put them AFTER the ACPI kernel argument. Let’s see what happens.

Okay, those are the only files that should be there if you are in “Nvidia mode” using Optimus-Switch.

Or this blacklisting:

# /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf:

install i915 /usr/bin/false
install intel_agp /usr/bin/false

What about xf86-video-modesetting

Let’s not confuse the fellow. If we throw too much at them, they may get lost and we could end up chasing our tails.

@ricklinux They said that they installed the Optimus-Switch solution for Optimus laptops. This means that they have the xf86 driver already installed. Its installation is apart of the install process.

I also took out the bit on nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=5500 which you said I could do.

running sudo grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg and reboot…

Looks good.

It seems to finish its systemd bring up, then back to the black screen. When I manually ran startx, I didn’t get errors, but I get stuck after it tells me what config I’m using. Ctrl+C fails me and I’m rebooting again.

running systemctl status lightdm, it worked! its actively running. Idk how to check the status of Xserver with systemctl. Posting log for lightdm

Okay. Progress. Can you also post your lightdm.conf? it is located at /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf

@GeekTea
Glad you have got it up and running now. Hope you enjoy EndeavourOS.
Thanks to @manuel and @linesma for helping out. Some of this just gets out of my wheel house. :slightly_smiling_face:

To be clear, you can boot your laptop and log in? Also, you are using Optimus-Switch?
