(at release, not true now) Ryzen 7000..Good Performance, Poor Value

The problem with technology is it doesn’t maintain its value so unless you’re using it immediately it will always end up cheaper than the sale you bought it.

Buying sales at the time for what you will use now or buying used will always be better money spent vs buying random sales that you might use in the future as you’ll never make your money back that way and just be throwing it away as its already lost value by the time you’ve received it from that sale.

That is your opinion. I don’t necessarily agree with it and I’m okay with that. We all have different ideas. What is value to you is not always the same for all. It’s our money and I don’t judge value just in terms of cost or based on someone else’s opinion . :innocent:

wtf, it’s nearly a price of the rtx 3070.

Here the Ryzen 9 7950X is on sale for $779 Cdn. So ya the 3070 is around the same price or higher depending on brand and model. Normal Price of the Ryzen 7950X is $949 Cdn.

Edit: I got the 5800X for $289 Cdn.
Edt2: They don’t have the 7000 series 3D versions listed yet and they are more $$
Edit3: Actually just listed 7900X 3D is $799 Cdn

Edit: Corrected
7950X 3D is $939 Cdn

Cursed generation, thankfully for another 3 years mining is no more, so it’s safer now to buy used hardware.

If you get some used hardware that is okay. I’m just showing what it costs currently here when available.

now there are really good budget offerings so this thread isnt nearly as relevent

and 5800x3d ??

Do you mean price? 5800X 3D It’s still high @ $439.00 Cdn on sale from $569.00

Edit: The 5800X is only $299.00 Cdn.

I would also consider the 5950x also unless you need the specific performance benefits the extra cache provides. 5950x is almost 1/2 its msrp right now in USD if looking to upgrade from cheaper 5000 or older 2000/3000

On the used market its a steal in the 200-300$ range

If I was going to buy a new computer today, and I would get the 7900 (without the X).
According to the reviews I watched, it is one of the most power efficient CPUs available today, and it isn’t that hard to cool it down.

Image got from Gamer Nexus CPUs review: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PA1LvwZYxCM

at least here in Germany, you would still get the X one. They both are at 450€ and you get more capabilities with the X-version. You enable AMD ECO Mode and the sub-option to limit it to 105W/65W TDP and you have the same cooling/efficiency values that the non-X would have given you, with the option to unlock more power by simply reverting the ECO-mode settings with the same money spent.

hmm, yes, the ECO-mode settings, I suppose you are right, better to have the power in your hands and choose performance or efficiency when you want…
I really like AM5 and what AMD is doing, I mean, energy is so expensive today that I wouldn’t just through any parts in my PC.

If money is not a problem keep spending. . . my computers are 11 years old at least. . . can’t say they’ll win any races for performance but they still do work well using Linux for what I need them to do. If computers are like cars then have at it. I’m all in for efficiency and speed but the downsize is then the software. What will or won’t work unless everything is backward compatible. Technology is wonderful but the costs can be prohibited. Waiting is sometimes the best choice. This is a hobby for some and cutting edge is what they want. Maybe I’m just getting old. . . you think?

Rich

Here the 7900X is $589 which is $10 Cdn cheaper than the the 7900.

I usually upgrade within a 5 years interval. I always sell the old parts and buy new ones (motherboard CPU and RAM). But next time I upgrade, I won’t sell, I’ll keep it because I’ll build a new pfsense server with it.
This motherboard has an Intel 2.5Gbps NIC that I’ll use as a trunk to the LAN.
I can buy a new NIC, 2 or 4 1Gbps ports and leave that for multi WAN purposes, maybe set up a LAG (LACP 802.3ad) with another switch. It would be a fun project indeed.

I changed my mind since last post, I would get the 7900x and enable the ECO mode

11 year old computers don’t work the same as today’s hardware. Not even close. Backward compatibility only goes so far. Eventually support is dropped and or it’s working on the same drivers that aren’t updated in years and the hardware just doesn’t work properly anymore or has issues. Does 11 year old hardware still work… sure. I have stuff older than that but they are slow as molasses and just don’t work well compared to what is being discussed here not even close. It’s not just the processor or the ram it’s all the hardware is 100 times faster as an analogy.

We are all getting older…and slower…rrrrrrrrr

indeed

Here the price is lower compared to some countries. It’s still high but that’s how it works. The 5800X for instance was $599 but has come down in price since the 7000 series is out and is $299 Cdn although the 5800X 3D is still $439 Cdn. But the 5000 series now will always be on sale since the newer ones are out. They usually rotate the prices between different models so you just buy it when it’s available at the price you want to pay.

Edit: I also like the 5 year cycle

Here there is always a delay compared to other countries, and also there is always an extra you pay when it is a new release. I suppose the stock they buy at high prices needs to be sold before they can buy more parts with lower prices.
So I never buy at launch, I usually wait one year to get better prices, and this also helps me to check BIOS revisions, bugs in hardware..
Some mobo manufactures launches several board revisions thus I usually know better what to buy.
