Are Indie Games a "Compromise"?

I’ve been a PS3/4/5 gamer for a long time. I’ve only recently acquired a PC capable of playing games. Obviously, due to anti-cheat, some games/launchers just won’t work (or won’t work properly) on Linux. So, are indie games a compromise, or do they stand alone as worthy games?

There are many amazing indie games. There are also many terrible ones. IMO, the same is true for AAA games.

Find games you like and play them, if they are indie or not shouldn’t really matter IMO.

Are you baiting or are you serious?

Same as in the AAA category, indie games can be absolute jewels or total trash - and everything in between. Looking at the games mentioned in the video that’s a good selection, with Disco Elysium maybe being my top game ever.

The AAA games nowadays cost a lot of money and there are revenue expectations that force some catering to mainstream expectations. They have to play it save. Often a new, unique experience is provided by those indie games. Most of them sink, but the few who pull it off are amazing.

In short: Triple A titles are pretty much repetitive release who carter a refined pattern of success.
If you want innovation and something fresh, you’ll almost exclusively find those by independent publishers.

Some of those indie studies can grow due to their releases. But others fail miserably with their success.

Well, too bad that there will never be a true successor. As the Za/um essentially doesn’t exist anymore.Or better said: The creators of Disco Elysium don’t work for Za/um anymore.

Dead serious. Just curious of the opinion of the gamers here. I’m relatively new to dealing with Linux gaming. I finally have a GPU and PC capable, so… curious.

Yeah, it’s a shame, that intellectual property seem dead now. But the are some offspring from the original Za/Um people, we have to see what they bring to the table:

In that case: Oh yeah, Indie games are totally worth it. Low “financial risk” Steam sales come around multiple times a year, find something that looks interesting to you and test them out.

Indie just means independent.

Could be trash or god-tier. Just depends on the game.

Though you might get some personal serotonin bonuses from knowing you are supporting some open source nerds passion project.

I have a lifetime of free game licenses from Epic that I’ll never get to play and others that I’ve gotten on the cheap, some indie and some AAA, and as others have said..

World of Goo

’ nuff said - this one really stood out for me.

Others (not for me):

  • Minecraft is (was) an indie game…
  • Among Us

The “General Rule” would state that Indie games are less likely to achiever the same level of polish…

But nothing can open the doors to a quirky idea, unique gameplay, original play or sheer charm like a great indie game.

I have found some solid indie games. For the most part I am lucky as I don’t really play games that require anti-cheat, as I basically play ARPGs now days. That is in large part because I find the AAA games generally not living up to the hype anymore and often being a waste of money. Even with the ARPG games, they were small studios, at least when I started them with Path of Exile and Last Epoch.

Well today only indie games have any creativity in them! (There’s some exceptions, but rare. )

I mostly just play indie games nowadays and older games(when Games were good!).

I don’t play generic online PVP garbage of today so i have not run into any Anti-Cheat crap… Yet.
