Sorry, I don’t know what to say.
At the risk of coming off as political (and other mods, please feel free to delete my comment), I don’t understand why everyone is in a race for early compliance to laws that are still unclear as my 3am blurry vision.
AND, if this requirement is for “operating systems”, why are init systems, package managers, portals in a race to comply.
Parental control features are the only genuine reason I see, but:
- a third party has no place between my child and me
- parental control can be implemented in less intrusive ways
Age requirement at the package level doesn’t make sense to me. Should firefox be age restricted because it can be used to access non child friendly websites? Should GCC be age restricted because what if my child locally compiles a tool to enable encrypted communications for circumventing censorship? Its funny to me; and also concerning because everyone is in a race to the bottom.
I believe / hope the merge request is sarcastic. It has lately become difficult for me to differentiate reality from sarcasm.
edit: ok the merge request is clearly sarcasm (please be)
I agree with you, it’s like they’re trying to beat each other to the finish line without knowing when the race starts and without knowing the exact rules. My personal opinion on this if they are going to do this, it should be the on websites being accessed because if it’s about restricting access to content than it would be needed to access a website, wanting it on all operating system it’s just pure for control.
Having read the merge request carefully, I have come to the conclusion that it is satire.
a piece of software named GIMP clearly references either a derogatory term for those with a disability or a person who takes a submissive or subservient role in BDSM or similar sexual activities. Why is no-one thinking of the children and preventing such filth being installed on their systems
is over the top, but it is the next bit that clinches it for me
web browsers provide access to adult material on the internet (and as far as I can tell, have no other usage), so we need to block these too
“as far as I can tell, have no other usage” cannot be a serious comment.
So there is no chance of this merge request being accepted, and I salute it as a wind up ![]()
The whole merge request doesn’t contain any code at all. It’s just adding
agerequirement:
Provides the minimum user age required to grant permission to install the
package. Useful for enforcing compliance to various laws worldwide.
as another field to be specified within a PKGBUILD. It’s an addition to the existing PKGBUILD.5.asciidoc file which is manual which describes the standard rules, the declarations and mandatory as well as optional fields which an individual PKGBUILD should contain.
As of now, that merge request has been already declined.
Anyway, as I has been requested by someone who obviously poured some sarcasm / irony and such into this. You might be shocked to realize that he is one of the pacman maintainers and not another random dude suggesting an addition.
Additionally, the response from the other contributor reacting to the merge request is quite telling:
Your keyboard requires an ID-reader, and the usb-hid kernel module requires an age verification feature.
Otherwise it cannot be ensured that the person who controls the environment is truthfully allowed to access a computer which might contain data that is not allowed for younger people.
This was sarcasm. …
I guess the Arch devs and their maintainers doesn’t handle their business dead seriously and like to fool around a little ![]()
For example, a piece of software named GIMP clearly references either a derogatory term for those with a disability or a person who takes a submissive or subservient role in BDSM or similar sexual activities. Why is no-one thinking of the children and preventing such filth being installed on their systems.
Wrong thread? This is “Joke of the day” for me.
It’s like asking to remove the f-word package from arch packages, “man page” the name discriminates other genders or asking for “What’s in your glass” thread removal from this forum in the name of child safety.
Stop treating children as AI robots that learn whatever you feed them.
It is a joke and intended as one. It is satire.
That’s what I thought first, like it was mocking Systemd age restriction, but you never know, we’re seeing so much stupidity all over the internet nowadays.
The OP forgot to mention “sudo” which is clearly a reference to Sudafed, an important ingredient in the synthesis of methamphetamine, a dangerous drug. Protect the kids!!!
There is no systemd age restriction.
Sorry, my reply got screwed up.
April 1st is around the corner.
I haven’t watched this specific video but I have subscribed to this channel for well over a decade when I was still in school. Pretty good channel (although much of it I no longer need for learning anymore like when I was in school), with various topics and Quantum computer progress updates he does among others.
But is it a wig? ![]()
Yer I like his channel and how he delivers the information on whatever it is what he is talking about.
Holding on to those glasses and that haircut out of the 80s definitely has the advantage that both might be up to date, sometime soon. Eventually. ![]()
The laws are already in effect in brazil.
Anyhow I don’t think this was a serious commit, he was just trolling.
It’s the 4 downvoters that worry me. No sense of humor or the ability to detect irony or satire. Those kind scare me more than an alley full of crackheads.
That said, “Allen McRae” did not even try to sell this as serious and really should of tried harder…if the downvotes were crititqing McRae’s ability to “take a piss” as the UKer’s say, then i have more faith in the human race ![]()
I’ve never seen him with different hair. Wouldn’t be the same without it at this point. ![]()
