After today's update, Chrome-based browsers (Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi) will not open web pages (Marked resolved)

After today’s update, Chrome-based browsers (Chrome, Opera, Vivaldi) will not open web pages. Firefox and Brave work fine. After deleting your Chrome profile directory and reinstalling your browser, the situation will remain the same. The problem also exists with the LTS kernel. Has anyone met anything like this?

If you run the browsers from the terminal, do you see any errors there?

Here Chrome and Vivaldi work OK.

Could the reason be some of your browser add-ons?

no issue here too, must be something related to your setup.
as @dalto mentioned start it from terminal command line can give a hint.
Does browser give any error ?

Opera and Vivaldi are both okay here.

Agree with Manuel. Turn off all of your extensions, and then turn them on one at a time if turning them all off solves the issue. I have seen the need to uninstall and reinstall specific extensions a few times.

indicates tha user tried already by that?

If the user is using some kind of sync then extensions could get reloaded. I have that enabled in Firefox for convenience, not sure about Chromium-based browsers.

Vivaldi - fine
Vivaldi-Snapshot - Broken
Google Chrome - fine.

Cannot for the life of me work out the problem, tried moving my config out of the way, tried downgrading (snapshot), cannot get it to run.
This is what I updated:

So the other updates I made:

One is completely innocent and one is lots of KDE stuff.

Did you try downgrading vivaldi-snapshot to see if it is actually just broken? It is a snapshot build after all.

Other than that, my question is the same as for the above poster. What happens if you run it from a terminal?

As stated, downgraded and moved config directory out of the way, currently running stable which is unaffected.

In the meantime, I also reproduced the case in question on another computer on which I also updated the EOS. The Chrome error message that is started in the terminal is: network_service_instance_impl.cc (331)] Network service crashed, restarting service. Based on that, I found this. https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1973461

The TLDR on this is that something in the systemd 249 upgrade seems to break nss as used by chrome. Downgrading to 248 restores functionality.

That’s what I thought. Anyway, I’m waiting for the fix.

@jruschme - which packages did you downgrade?

If I recall correctly, there were 4:

  • systemd
  • libsystemd
  • systemd-sysvcompat
  • lib32-libsystemd

You may not have the last one unless you have multilib enabled and are using something like wine. I think just downgrading systemd might be enough, but I did the others just to be safe.
