So, as I understand 6.8 will be the first edition released after beginning to remove the X11-only code. From what i’ve read the vast majority of people are using Wayland-only now. I haven’t bothered with X11 (don’t even have any of it left on system) for years now.
6.8 is scheduled for October, not that long away.
GNOME went there some time ago? Two releases or so? (I don’t keep up with GNOME as it drives me nuts).
All of my personal Plasma based systems are now essentially fully relying on Wayland.
However, with respect to my work, I deploy remote systems that drive interactivity, and currently these are using KDE Plasma with X11, as the applications I develop still leverage X11 when deployed natively to Linux, a limitation of an upstream dependency. That’s not a huge issue, as they also run fine under XWayland. However, my remote access software also doesn’t fully support Wayland.
In short, I’ll either be migrating to a different DE (eg: LXQt), or figuring out XLibre for such systems.
Well, unless you pin at 6.7 level, I don’t think Plasma will be your viable target, even if you did XLibre, you’ll be stuck with an (I think) outdated desktop. That is unless development continues at some level on an less mainstream desktop for X11.
Yes, that SEEMS to be the most pressing thing now days (I don’t need it anymore myself not being in the work environment), the remote transparency that X11 has.

Yes, I saw that. I also read a critique that was doubtful as it was (at the time?) a one-man show and probably not going to be long-term viable tracking main-line Plasma changes. It’s an interesting issue.
This is my major concern about the upcoming Plasma 6.8
At the moment there is no solution for a remote access. I am using xrdp to login to my environment while I am not at home, e.g. during vacation (via VPN). By now I know that there are discussions in the xrpd- and PLM-development ongoing but still no solution …
You know, you finally gave an actual reason that I can understand as to why you prefer X11 for some things: a piece of software you like using works more reliability under X11. Most individuals that are against Wayland and seem to hate it with every fibre of their being never gave an actual, concrete reason, in my experience at least.
It sucks that Plasma will no longer have X11 support, but at least for desktop use, Wayland is IMHO better, even if the protocol is implemented weirdly across DEs resulting in weird behaviors across DEs…
